How to Set Up Reptile Terrarium Heating and Lighting

Why a sunny window doesn't provide real UVB, and the bulb-replacement schedule that has nothing to do with whether it still looks bright.

Reptile heating and lighting get two things wrong more often than any other part of setup: assuming visible light means adequate UVB, and skipping the thermostat that actually prevents the heat source from becoming dangerous.

UVB is essential for many species — and glass blocks it

Many reptile species, including bearded dragons, iguanas, and many tortoises, need UVB light to synthesize vitamin D3 in their skin, which their body then uses to properly absorb calcium. Without adequate UVB, these species can develop metabolic bone disease — a serious, painful condition causing soft, deformed bones, and in severe cases affecting mobility and internal organs. A commonly missed detail: standard glass and most plastics filter out UVB wavelengths almost entirely, so a reptile sitting in a sunny window gets real heat but essentially no usable UVB from that sunlight — a purpose-built reptile UVB lamp inside the enclosure is necessary for indoor housing, not a sunny spot near a window.

UVB bulbs degrade before they look like they've failed

A UVB bulb's actual UVB output drops off significantly over time, well before the bulb stops producing visible light or appears to have failed — a bulb can look perfectly bright and normal while providing little to no real UVB benefit. Manufacturers commonly recommend replacing UVB bulbs every 6 to 12 months on a fixed schedule, regardless of whether the bulb still visibly works, since visible brightness isn't a reliable indicator of remaining UVB output.

Distance and obstruction both reduce real UVB exposure

UVB intensity drops off quickly with distance from the bulb, meaning a lamp positioned too far from the basking area can be far less effective than the same bulb positioned correctly — many UVB bulbs are only effective within a specific distance range from the animal, commonly cited as somewhere in the range of 12-18 inches depending on the specific bulb, worth checking against the manufacturer's own guidance. Any mesh, glass, or plastic between the bulb and the animal also reduces UVB reaching them, sometimes substantially, even if it looks like an open, unobstructed setup.

A thermostat isn't optional — it prevents burns and fire risk

A dedicated thermostat controlling the heat source is what actually keeps a basking area or heat lamp from reaching dangerously high or even lethal temperatures, protecting both the animal from thermal burns and the home from a real fire hazard from an uncontrolled heat source running continuously at full output. This is a genuine safety requirement, not an optional upgrade, and it's worth treating a heat source without thermostat control as an incomplete, unsafe setup rather than a acceptable budget shortcut.

The one thing people forget

Check the specific UVB needs for the exact species being kept, rather than assuming a generic "reptile bulb" covers every animal equally — nocturnal and crepuscular species have different UVB requirements than diurnal, actively basking species, and using the wrong intensity or type of UVB bulb for a specific species' actual needs is a common, avoidable setup mistake.
