For outdoor bouldering, a spotter — someone positioned to help guide a falling climber's body toward the pad and away from hazards, rather than literally catching their full weight — and correctly positioned crash pads covering likely landing zones are both real, meaningful safety practices, not optional extras for more cautious climbers. Outdoor bouldering also introduces uneven, natural ground beneath pads, unlike a gym's flat, consistent padded flooring, which is worth factoring into how confidently a given problem should be attempted outdoors versus in a controlled gym setting.
The one thing people forget
Warm up properly before attempting harder problems, the same way any physically demanding activity benefits from a warm-up, rather than jumping directly into difficult climbs on cold muscles and tendons. Bouldering's short, powerful movements place real, concentrated stress on fingers and connective tissue specifically, and a proper warm-up meaningfully reduces the risk of the finger and tendon injuries that are a well-documented, common issue in the sport, particularly as climbers progress to more difficult, physically demanding problems.
