Model building has two details that genuinely affect whether a first kit turns out well: matching glue to the plastic type, and honestly matching a kit's skill level to actual experience.
Glue type has to match the plastic
Plastic cement (styrene cement) chemically welds standard styrene plastic model parts together by slightly melting and fusing the surfaces, creating a genuinely stronger bond than a purely adhesive glue — this is the appropriate glue type for the vast majority of standard injection-molded plastic model kits. Using a general-purpose craft glue or superglue instead of proper plastic cement on styrene models typically produces a weaker bond and can leave visible glue residue or damage to the plastic surface, since it's not chemically formulated for how styrene models are actually constructed. For different specific materials — resin parts, certain metal components sometimes included in more detailed kits — a different, specifically compatible adhesive is needed, since plastic cement doesn't work the same way, or at all, on non-styrene materials.
Kit skill level ratings reflect real complexity differences
Most model kit manufacturers rate kits by skill level (often numbered 1 through 4 or similar), and this generally reflects genuine differences in part count, fit precision required, and complexity of assembly and painting — not just a marketing suggestion. Starting with a genuinely beginner-rated kit, even if a more advanced or exciting-looking kit is tempting, avoids the frustration of struggling with poor part fit or assembly complexity beyond current skill, which can sour the experience much more than the specific subject matter of a first, simpler kit choice.
Paint types serve different purposes and have real compatibility considerations
Enamel paints dry slowly, allowing more time to correct mistakes and blend, but require solvent-based thinners and cleanup, and take longer to fully cure between coats. Acrylic paints dry much faster and clean up with water, making them more convenient for many builders, though the faster drying time means less working time per coat before it sets. Painting over certain paint types with an incompatible different type can cause the underlying paint to react poorly (sometimes described as "crazing" or wrinkling) — checking compatibility, or sticking with one paint system throughout a single model, avoids this specific, frustrating failure.
Panel lining and weathering are real, learnable techniques that transform a finished model
A basic, cleanly assembled and painted model looks noticeably different from one with additional panel lining (darkening recessed detail lines for depth) and weathering (simulating wear, dirt, or fading) — these are genuine additional techniques worth learning once basic assembly and painting are comfortable, and they're often what separates a competent but flat-looking build from one with real visual depth and realism.
The one thing people forget
Test-fit parts together before applying glue, especially for more complex assemblies with multiple parts meeting at once — dry-fitting first reveals fit issues or the correct assembly order before glue is applied and mistakes become much harder to correct, a simple habit that prevents a large share of common assembly frustrations.
