Why leather weight and tanning method determine what a piece of leather can actually become, not just how it looks.

Leather isn't one uniform material — weight (thickness) and tanning method both genuinely determine what a specific piece of leather is actually suited for, beyond appearance alone.

Leather weight determines what it can actually be used for

Leather thickness is measured in ounces (a somewhat confusing but standard unit referring to thickness, not actual weight), and different weights suit genuinely different projects — thin, lightweight leather works well for wallets, small accessories, and items needing flexibility, while thick, heavy leather suits belts, structured bags, and items needing rigidity and durability. Using leather that's too thin for a structural project (a belt, for instance) produces a piece that doesn't hold its shape or withstand use well, regardless of the quality of the leather or the skill applied to working it — matching weight to the actual intended project matters as a foundational decision, not a minor detail.

Vegetable-tanned vs. chrome-tanned leather behave differently

Vegetable-tanned leather is tanned using natural tannins from plant materials, producing a firmer, more structured leather well suited to tooling, stamping, and carving decorative designs, and it develops a natural patina and darkens attractively with age and use. Chrome-tanned leather uses a chemical tanning process, producing a generally softer, more flexible, often more water-resistant leather, but it doesn't take tooling or stamped decoration nearly as well as vegetable-tanned leather does. Choosing based on the actual intended technique and look — decorative tooled work versus soft, flexible everyday items — matters more than assuming one tanning method is simply higher quality than the other.

Hand-stitching leather requires different tools than fabric sewing

Leather is generally hand-stitched using a saddle stitch technique with two needles and waxed thread, producing a strong, durable seam that a standard sewing machine (without special leather-capable settings and needles) typically can't replicate on leather of meaningful thickness. Basic tools — an awl or pricking iron to create consistent stitch holes, two harness needles, and waxed thread — cover the fundamentals for hand-stitching most beginner leather projects, without needing an industrial sewing machine investment early on.

Edge finishing affects both appearance and durability

Raw, unfinished leather edges fray and wear over time with handling — edge beveling (rounding the sharp edge slightly) followed by burnishing (smoothing and often slightly darkening the edge through friction, sometimes with an edge-finishing compound) produces a considerably more durable and professional-looking finished edge than leaving edges raw and unfinished. This is a real technique worth learning early, since it affects the practical longevity of a finished piece, not just its polish and appearance.

The one thing people forget

Cut leather pieces slightly oversized initially and trim to final size after major shaping or wet-forming steps, rather than cutting to exact final dimensions from the start — leather can shift slightly during wet-forming or heavy stitching, and starting oversized with a final trim step avoids ending up with a piece that's come out slightly too small to work with after the more involved construction steps are complete.
