A vest that concentrates weight unevenly — too much in front, too little support across the back and shoulders — can throw off posture and gait, increasing strain on the lower back and changing movement mechanics in ways that could contribute to injury over repeated use. A well-designed vest distributes weight evenly across the torso, front and back, and sits close to the body's center of mass rather than hanging loosely or shifting during movement. This even distribution matters more to both comfort and safety than the total weight number alone.

Start with modest added weight and progress gradually

A commonly cited general guideline suggests starting with vest weight around 5-10% of body weight and increasing gradually as the body adapts, rather than starting with a heavy load immediately. Check with a doctor before starting weighted vest use with any pre-existing back, joint, or cardiovascular concerns, since the added load affects the whole body's mechanical and cardiovascular demand, not just the specific muscles being targeted by the vest's added resistance. This is a genuine, practical consideration before adding meaningful extra load to regular activity, not just general caution for its own sake.
