TV shopping is dominated by panel-technology names that sound like marketing jargon but actually describe a real, meaningful difference in how the screen produces an image.
The one distinction that explains almost everything else
OLED panels are self-emissive — every individual pixel produces its own light and can switch off completely. That gives OLED true, per-pixel black levels and very high contrast, which is why it's generally considered the best choice for movie-watching in a dark room. The tradeoffs: lower peak brightness than the best LED-based sets (making it comparatively weaker in a bright room with a lot of glare), a higher price at larger screen sizes, and a real (though much reduced in recent generations) risk of permanent image retention from long periods of static on-screen content, like a channel logo or a game's HUD.
LED, QLED, and Mini-LED are all fundamentally the same underlying technology: an LCD panel lit from behind by a separate backlight. QLED adds a quantum-dot layer for richer color; Mini-LED uses many more, smaller backlight zones for finer control over brightness in different parts of the screen at once. These sets generally reach higher peak brightness than OLED — better for bright rooms and sports — but can't match OLED's per-pixel black level, since even the best backlight zones still light up a small area, not a single pixel.
Room lighting matters more than the spec sheet
The "best" panel technology genuinely depends on where the TV will live. A dark, dedicated media room is where OLED's contrast advantage shows up most; a bright living room with windows and daytime viewing is where a bright Mini-LED or QLED set tends to look better in practice, regardless of which one wins on paper.
What else is worth checking
- Refresh rate — 120Hz or higher matters for fast motion (sports, gaming); 60Hz is fine for most everyday viewing.
- HDMI 2.1 ports — needed for the full frame rate and resolution modern game consoles and some 4K content can output; check how many ports actually support it, not just the total port count.
- Viewing angle — LCD-based panels (LED/QLED/Mini-LED) tend to lose contrast and color accuracy when viewed from the side; OLED holds up better off-angle. Matters a lot if the couch isn't centered on the screen.
The one thing people forget
Check the actual dimensions against your furniture and viewing distance before buying, not just the diagonal screen size. A TV that's technically a great fit for the room can still feel wrong if it's mounted too high, too close, or too far from where people actually sit.
