How to Buy a Router or Mesh WiFi System

Why a single router struggles in larger homes, and what the WiFi 6/6E/7 numbers actually buy you.

A single router's signal weakens with distance and gets blocked by walls and floors, which is why larger or multi-story homes often end up with a strong signal near the router and a dead zone in a back bedroom or basement. A mesh system spreads several small nodes around the home, each covering a smaller area but handing off your device seamlessly between nodes as you move — trading one powerful broadcast point for several overlapping, evenly distributed ones. For anything beyond a small apartment, mesh generally solves coverage problems a single router — even an expensive one — structurally can't.

What WiFi 6, 6E, and 7 actually mean

Each new WiFi generation improves how efficiently the airwaves are used, especially with many devices connected at once — which matters more in a house full of phones, laptops, smart speakers, and other connected devices than the old "one device streaming video" scenario most routers were originally designed around. WiFi 6E and 7 also add access to a wider swath of radio spectrum, which reduces interference from neighboring networks and other WiFi devices in dense areas like apartment buildings.

Practically: the benefit is most noticeable with many connected devices or in a crowded WiFi environment, and depends on your other devices actually supporting the same standard — a WiFi 7 router paired entirely with older WiFi 5 devices won't unlock WiFi 7's benefits for those specific devices, even if the network itself supports it.

The one thing people forget

Check that your internet plan's actual speed matches what your router and devices can use — a router capable of multi-gigabit wireless speeds is wasted if your internet service itself is far slower, and conversely, a very fast internet plan is bottlenecked by an old, underpowered router. The router and the internet plan need to be matched to each other, not evaluated as separate purchases.
