Space heaters are one of the more safety-relevant small appliances in a home — they're a leading cause of home heating fires, which makes a few specific safety features worth prioritizing over comfort extras.
Wattage determines room size capacity
Most space heaters are rated around 1,500 watts, which is roughly the practical maximum for a standard household electrical circuit without risking an overloaded outlet. As a very rough general guideline, about 10 watts per square foot of room space is commonly cited for adequate heating in a reasonably insulated room — meaning a single standard heater is generally suited to heating one room, not a whole floor or an open-concept space, regardless of marketing claims about larger coverage area.
Automatic shut-off features are a real safety essential, not an extra
A tip-over switch automatically shuts the heater off if it's knocked over, and an overheat protection feature shuts it off if internal temperatures exceed a safe threshold. These aren't optional comfort features — they directly address two of the most common ways space heaters cause fires (being knocked over onto flammable material, or overheating due to a fault or obstruction), and a heater lacking either feature is a meaningfully higher fire risk than one with both, regardless of how well it otherwise performs.
Never use an extension cord not rated for the heater's wattage
Space heaters draw substantial current, and plugging one into an underrated extension cord or power strip is a well-documented fire risk — the cord can overheat under sustained heavy load in a way it wouldn't with lower-draw devices. The safest practice is plugging a space heater directly into a wall outlet; if an extension cord is unavoidable, it needs to be a heavy-gauge cord specifically rated for the heater's full wattage, not a generic light-duty extension cord.
Heating technology affects how a room actually feels warm
Ceramic and fan-based heaters warm a room's air relatively quickly through active air circulation, good for quickly taking the chill off a room being used right now. Radiant heaters warm objects and people directly in their line of sight rather than the air itself, providing more immediate localized warmth (useful for someone sitting still near it) but doing less to raise the overall room temperature. Oil-filled radiator heaters warm up more slowly but retain heat longer after being turned off, and operate without a fan, making them quieter for overnight or background use.
The one thing people forget
Never leave a space heater running unattended or overnight while sleeping, and keep it at least a few feet away from anything flammable — bedding, curtains, furniture — regardless of which safety features the specific heater has. These features reduce risk, but they don't eliminate the need for basic safe placement and supervision.
